Dashboard settings

To get to a dashboard’s settings:

  1. Select Dashboards from the global navigation.

  2. Open the dashboard whose settings you’d like to edit.

  3. Select Settings from the dashboard sidebar.

The following dashboard settings are available to edit:

General

The following settings will allow you to adjust the presentation of your data, how it’s viewed, and how up-to-date it is.

Title

The name of the dashboard.

Description

Include a description to give dashboard viewers an overview of the dashboard’s purpose and other important information.

URL slug

The part of the web address that points to the dashboard.

When you create the dashboard, we autogenerate a URL using the category and title of the dashboard. You can edit this URL slug to your liking. If you change the dashboard title or the category it does not automatically update the URL slug.

Category

The folder where the dashboard is located.

You can also use nested categories with the following format: Parent category > Child category Learn more about dashboard categories.

Time zone

Changes the dates and times in the dashboard to use the chosen time zone

Convert dates and times to viewer’s local time zone

Use the dashboard viewer’s time zone instead of the set dashboard time zone

Data freshness

Allows you to manage how up to date the data is on your dashboard

Cache duration

You must have permission to manage the dashboard in order to change the cache duration.

How long the data on the dashboard is considered up to date

Each chart is cached in our system from the first time the chart is created and saved. The cache duration tells us how long to keep chart data before querying your data source for fresh data. The frequency at which this occurs depends on your refresh dashboard setting.

If you’d like fresh data very often, you can set the cache duration to a lower time interval. The lowest cache duration you can set is two minutes, but this may severely impact your data source performance. If you’re worried about your data source performance, you can set the cache duration to a higher value to trigger queries less frequently.

Your workspace’s default cache duration is set for all dashboards in your workspace settings. Select Use workspace default to set the dashboard’s cache duration to your workspace default, or deselect to override it.

If cache is out of date, refresh dashboard

Specifies when you should send new queries to data sources if the dashboard is out of date

There are three options for refreshing the data on your dashboard:

  • When dashboard is open in the active tab - Your browser tab is active if you're viewing it.

  • When dashboard is first opened in a tab - The dashboard won’t refresh again while it’s open.

  • Manually - The dashboard will only refresh when you select Refresh data from the dashboard sidebar. This only sends new queries if the cached data is more than two minutes old.

You can also refresh the data for individual charts. Learn more about manually refreshing chart data.

Depending on the selection, the dashboard will update the charts with whatever exists in the cache at that point. If there are no existing results in the cache, or the cache is expired, then the chart’s queries are sent to the data sources and the chart’s caches will update.

Automatically update dashboard when a control changes

Triggers new queries to request new data every time you change the values of a control

Deselect this option to update multiple controls together and apply the changes as a single set of new queries. You’ll see a Update charts button in the upper right of your dashboard whenever you change a control.

Deselecting this setting is beneficial for dashboard performance because it prevents new chart queries from triggering every time you make a control selection, for example, in a multi-select “Dropdown” control.

Allow viewers to refresh data

Lets dashboard viewers manually refresh the dashboard with new data

Controls

View and edit the existing controls on this dashboard. You can also edit the "Hidden variable" controls, which aren't directly accessible on your dashboard. Learn more about controls.

Access

You must have permission to manage the dashboard to grant or revoke access.

People with access to this dashboard can interact with the charts and controls on it, but only some people may be able to edit the dashboard or give access to others. Learn more about dashboard access.
